Klaas Boter is a graffiti artist active in the area of Groningen. Klaas prefers to work at night time. At this time his mind is more clear. As an artist he calls himself “Boter”. This is a typical Dutch name. Were most of the people give themselves an American artist name, Klaas choose to do it differently. He embraced his roots and gave himself a Dutch name, namely his surname. As a graffiti artist one needs a name. This name forms the basis of the artists’ work. Boter consists of five letters and is symmetrical. The other version of his artist name, namely ‘Klaas Boter’, is ten letters (five letters each). His name provides a nice surface for his work. Text and image blend together. Through time, Boter knew different styles. He started off with drawing women, animals and typography. Nowadays he is employed at a tattoo shop.
At the beginning of his career he tried to gain brand awareness by taking on commissioned art. His art is more than the common graffiti ‘tagging’. He drew the city skyline, transforms typography into image and can even draw a painting like artwork with cows on a wall with his graffiti. Being versatile is one of his perks and the result of years of working experience. Every action, every drawing is a conscious decision. Boter tries to blend the surrounding into his work and play with this.
Boter has been exhibited in Galerie Simplon, de Kunstbank Groningen, an exhibition in gallery de Stomerij and several other art projects at EMG Factors.
